Voxiva Solution Supports Phase IV Clinical Trials in India

Washington DC, 6 November 2007: Voxiva Inc, has deployed an application that supports a phase IV clinical trial being conducted by the Institute of One World Health (IOWH); a California based nonprofit pharmaceutical company. The trial, initially being carried out in the Indian state of Bihar, is for the drug Paromomycin IM Injection used for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). With about half a million new cases occurring annually visceral leishmaniasis is the world's second most deadly parasitic disease, after malaria.

VL primarily afflicts rural, resource-poor populations and is particularly prevalent in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sudan and Brazil. This is where Voxiva's technology comes in. Via the creative and cost effective use of Short Message Service (SMS) Voxiva's application sends a daily notifications to participating health centers listing the patients referred and the reason for referral; allowing health center staff to immediately follow up with patients who fail to attend for either further assessment or treatment. "Since participation and compliance plays such a crucial part in the legitimacy of any clinical trial, having the ability to be able to accurately track and manage patients in what is an infrastructure challenged environment is vital for our customer" says Justin Sims, CEO of Voxiva.

Medical researchers from key local research centers, many internationally renowned for their work in VL, are participating in the Phase 4 Program. Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz, OneWorld Health's co-founder and Chief Medical Officer said "Our ongoing research results underscore the potential of Paromomycin IM Injection to treat VL-and save lives-at very low cost and in safe and practical ways. We look forward to working with our partners and the government of India on this important Phase 4 Program."

Voxiva and IOWH are also exploring the possibility of using Voxiva's Java based mobile application as another component of the solution. This would allow health workers to enter trial data on their mobile phone even in areas where they have no network connectivity, and then transmit the information later once a connection can be established. This is the same technology Voxiva has already trialed with the Ministry of Agriculture in Indonesia for the early detection of Avian flu; and is currently rolling out in Rwanda to support the treatment and management of HIV/AIDS patients by the Rwandan Ministry of Health.
